OWC Machine Electricity Consumption: How to Read the Numbers

Short answer

The number printed in kW on an OWC specification is usually connected load, not guaranteed kWh consumed every hour. Actual energy use depends on which loads run, for how long, the process conditions, feedstock and control logic.

Connected load is a sizing input

Connected load helps plan electrical infrastructure. Published model data lists approximately 3.5 kW for 25 kg/day, 4.5 kW for 50 kg/day, 6.0 kW for 100 kg/day, 8.5 kW for 200 kg/day and 15.5 kW for 500 kg/day.

kW and kWh are not the same thing

kW is power at a moment; kWh is energy over time. A 6 kW connected load does not automatically mean the machine uses 6 kWh every hour of the day. Motors and heaters may cycle or operate differently across the process.

Why generic “monthly running cost” can mislead

The rupee cost depends on actual energy consumption and local tariff. Feedstock moisture, loading, ambient conditions, heater cycling and operator practice can all influence runtime. Ask for site-specific operating assumptions rather than multiplying the nameplate by 24 hours.

Electrical provision should be confirmed before delivery

The final machine documents should guide phase, cable sizing, protection, earthing and isolation. Use a competent electrician and do not bypass protection devices to make an installation fit existing wiring.

Compare models on more than electricity

A lower connected load is useful, but capacity, material, process performance, reliability, service access and the actual daily waste fit still matter. Electricity is one line in a lifecycle comparison.

Connected load and energy consumed are not the same number

Connected load is the sum of equipment that may demand power under the published configuration; actual energy used over a day depends on duty cycle, heater operation, controls, feed condition and operating schedule. For procurement, use connected load to size the electrical provision. For running-cost analysis, request measured or documented consumption data for the exact machine and operating condition instead of multiplying connected load by 24 hours.

  • Use published connected load for electrical planning.
  • Confirm phase, cable, protection and earthing with a competent electrician.
  • Ask how heater and drive duty are controlled.
  • Do not convert kW to daily kWh without a duty-cycle basis.

kW is a power rating; kWh is energy over time.
