SS304 vs SS202 for Compost / OWC Machines

    Short answer

SS304 and SS202 are different stainless-steel grades. For an OWC buyer, the useful question is not simply “is it stainless?” but which grade is used at the wet-waste contact surfaces, what thickness is specified, what is used for the outer body, and how the fabrication is finished.

Why grade matters in a wet waste environment

Organic-waste equipment sees moisture, salts, food residues, cleaning chemicals and repeated temperature changes. Material selection influences corrosion behaviour and cleanability, but service life also depends on fabrication quality, maintenance and the actual feedstock.

SS304 is commonly specified for waste-contact areas

Many commercial OWC specifications use SS304 for the inner/waste-contact vessel because it offers a useful corrosion-resistance and hygiene profile for wet processing. Published specifications commonly use SS304 at the waste-contact vessel across multiple capacities.

Do not compare grade without thickness

A higher grade label does not describe the complete construction. Ask for thickness, reinforcement, weld finish, panel design and which exact parts use that material. Two “SS304 machines” can still be built very differently.

SS202 is not automatically a fraud or failure

SS202 is a legitimate stainless grade used in many applications. The engineering question is whether its corrosion performance, location and thickness are appropriate for the duty. Avoid absolute claims based only on the grade name.

Put the material schedule in the quotation

The cleanest procurement approach is a line-by-line material schedule: inner vessel, outer panels, shaft/paddles where relevant, frame, fasteners and thickness. That makes later inspection much easier.

Write the material schedule part by part

Instead of accepting “stainless-steel machine” as a complete specification, list the inner vessel, paddles or shaft where relevant, outer panels, frame, fasteners and thickness separately. This prevents a quotation from using one grade name to describe the whole machine when only selected areas use it. It also makes receiving inspection and future repair discussions much easier.

    • Identify every wet-waste contact surface.
    • Record grade and thickness separately.
    • Ask how welds and fabricated edges are finished.
    • Compare material schedule together with warranty and maintenance.

Grade is one input; construction detail determines the complete duty.
